Methimazole Prescriptions

How does Methimazole work?

A normal daily starting dose for adults is 15mg for mild hyperthyroidism, 30-40mg for moderate to severe hyperthyroidism, or 60mg for severe hyperthyroidism. This total daily dose will be divided into three separate doses. Patients who are taking Methimazole as a maintenance measure may be prescribed between 5mg and 15mg daily.

Children will usually be prescribed a daily dose of 0.4mg/kg of body weight, again to be divided into three separate doses. Usually the maintenance dose will be half of the standard dose.

Methimazole Side Effects

Patients may experience side effects such as upset stomach, skin rash, hair loss, vomiting, swelling, loss of taste, joint and muscle pain, decreased platelets and white blood cells, and dizziness.
