Precautions about Ranolazine

Ranolazine ER interacts with several common forms of psychiatric medication including phenobarbitol and some antipsychotics. Tricyclic antidepressants are metabolized in a similar way, so they may need to be prescribed at a lower dose in patients taking ranolazine. The same applies to drugs such as digoxin and cyclosporine. As with these drugs, grapefruit can increase levels in the blood, so patients should not eat grapefruit or drink its juice. It is also important that patients avoid the popular herbal medicine St John’s wort.

Ranolazine is known to prolong the electrocardiagram QTc interval in some patients, especially if they also suffer from hepatic problems, so it should be used only with extreme caution in these cases. Other drugs with a similar effect on the heart should not be used in combination with this one.

Due to fetal abnormalities identified in animal studies, ranolazine should not be used in pregnancy unless the need is severe and there is no better option.

Ranolazine ER Side Effects
