Valganciclovir Hydrochloride Prescriptions

Valganciclovir Hydrochloride is a generic antiviral used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) and used as a prophylactic in cases where there is a significant risk of CMV developing. Quickly broken down into glanciclovir in the liver and intestines, it subsequently interferes with viral RNA (ribonucleic acid) synthesis, stopping CMV from reproducing. It cannot cure CMV but it can be used to regulate it effectively and can potentially prevent blindness.

Valganciclovir Hydrochloride Solutions and Tablets

Valganciclovir solutions are available for use by children between four months and 16 years of age. They are not suitable for adults, who should buy valganciclovir hydrochloride tablets instead. The tablets should never be broken or chewed but must be swallowed whole. Dust from the tablets must not be inhaled and the solution should be kept off the skin. Whatever form it is taken in, valganciclovir should always be consumed with food.

Dosage has to be carefully established for each patient based on how well they can tolerate the drug. Sometimes a high dose is used in the early stages to gain control over CMV infections affecting HIV positive people. Children should never be on a higher dose than 900mg daily.

Contraception, Fertility, and Pregnancy

Valganciclovir can be hazardous to fetal development because it has the potential to interfere with DNA replication and should therefore be avoided in pregnancy, with pregnant women not even handling it for others. Women at risk of getting pregnant should use reliable contraception throughout the time they need to take it and for 30 days afterwards, while male valganciclovir patients with partners at risk of pregnancy should use condoms while taking it and for 90 days afterwards. Male patients should be aware that the drug may make them less fertile in the long term.

Precautions

Valganciclovir is initially broken down in the liver and is potentially hepatotoxic so should not be used for liver transplant patients, and used only with caution in patients with existing liver problems.

Vaccinations can be problematic for valganciclovir patients, with some proving ineffective and some presenting an infection risk. Patients using the drug should not get vaccinations without discussing them first.

Valganciclovir interacts with cilastatin, didanosine, mycophenolate and probenecid.

Side Effects of Valganciclovir Hydrochloride

You should not buy Valganciclovir without being aware of its potentially serious side effects. Most significantly, it can have a depressive effect on bone marrow, leading to immunosuppression, anemia and low platelet levels. Patients using it should avoid contact sports and other activities likely to cause bruising. Any unusual bruising or bleeding should be investigated immediately, as should dizziness or feelings of weakness. Patients should also avoid contact with persons known to have infectious illnesses and their blood counts should be checked at frequent intervals.

Patients may experience an upset stomach or diarrhea. This is common and should not cause concern unless it becomes severe. Allergic reactions to vanciclovir are rare but any facial swelling requires immediate investigation in case it leads to breathing difficulties. Minor side effects usually stabilize once the patient has become used to the drug.
