Vancomycin Side Effects

Vancomycin should normally be avoided in pregnancy and used with caution in patients with a history of kidney problems, hearing loss or inflammatory bowel disease. It does not pass into breast milk and is not known to cause problems for infants if used by breastfeeding mothers.

Several other drugs interact with vancomycin and this should be carefully discussed by doctor and patient before the antibiotic is prescribed. It can be problematic in combination with streptomycin, tobramycin, kanamycin and gentamicin as well as amikacin, amphotericin B, bacitracin, cisplatin, colistin and polymyxin B.
