Uses for Nicorette Gum

Nicorette Gum is used to quit smoking by replacing the habit of smoking cigarettes while still providing the tobacco’s addictive element of nicotine. This product is a helpful step towards quitting smoking. When you give up cigarettes, there can be a big drop in your nicotine levels. The nicotine drop can result in withdrawal symptoms including headache, irritability, weight gain, nervousness, tobacco craving, and concentration problems. Nicorette Gum helps prevent the withdrawal effects to make the quitting process easier.

You can start chewing Nicorette Gum even if you’re still phasing off of cigarettes. Nicorette provides smaller, controlled and “cleaner” doses of nicotine to your system so there isn’t as much of a withdrawal shock. The idea is to use Nicorette gum to slowly decrease your body’s dependence on nicotine while you adjust to changing the habit to smoke cigarettes. You can chew Nicorette gum as a replacement when you crave a cigarette at trigger moments such as after meals or coffee breaks.

Remember that Nicorette Gum is meant to be part of your program, which also includes behavior change, a support system, or counseling.

Side Effects of Nicorette Gum

Side effects of Nicorette Gum may include headache, mouth or jaw problems, heartburn, or diarrhea. Let your doctor know if these do not go away, or if they get worse.

Chewing Nicorette Gum too quickly can lead to hiccups, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or insomnia. Chew more slowly if you experience these symptoms.

Serious side effects would include chest pain, intense dizziness, irregular heartbeat, slurred speech, or numbness in your extremities or on one side of your body. There is an increased likelihood of serious effects occurring if smoking is continued while using Nicorette Gum.

How to Use Nicorette Gum

Only chew one piece of Nicorette Gum at a time. Do not consume any food or beverage for fifteen minutes before using Nicorette Gum, or while chewing Nicorette Gum. Chew the product slowly until you notice a tingling sensation, then move the gum to the inside of your cheek, between your cheek and gums. Hold Nicorette Gum here until the tingling goes away. At this point, start chewing the gum again until the tingling comes back. The nicotine in the product will be gone after about half an hour.

For your first six weeks of quitting smoking, chew at least nine pieces of Nicorette Gum daily. If you have an especially strong craving, you can use a second piece of gum within an hour, but do not chew one piece right after another. This can cause side effects like hiccups, heartburn or nausea. You should not use more than 24 pieces of gum per day. In the first month of quitting, people usually use nine to twelve pieces of Nicorette Gum a day. Once you have phased off of cigarettes and have a steady dosage and schedule of Nicorette Gum, maintain this for six weeks, then start to decrease your dosage. After twelve weeks, if you still feel you need Nicorette Gum to keep you from smoking, speak to your doctor for recommendations.
