Few people are aware of how arthritis can affect their life

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability, yet few people are aware of how common the condition is or how likely they are to develop it during their lifetime, according to a new study. Researchers from The American College surveyed a group of individuals to gauge their knowledge of issues affecting disability. The results showed that 97 percent were not aware that arthritis is the leading cause of disability. Furthermore, 80 percent did not know that women are significantly more likely than men to develop joint health problems. The researchers said the findings suggest that millions of Americans are likely unprepared to face a disability. This could leave individuals in a difficult financial situation. People should educate themselves on the topic to avoid losing their income and having no plan for responding to the situation. "Our research revealed a great need for people, especially women, to be better educated about the risk of disability, and to be better prepared for the potentially devastating impact that a disability can have on their lives and families," said Mary Quist-Newins, director of Center for Women and financial Services at The American College. |
