May 17 through 23 is Schizophrenia Awareness Week

Sponsored by the Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio, this advocacy of international observance is designed to publicly share intriguing facts regarding the mental condition, provide educational resources for those to research the effects and symptoms as well as hold local events dedicated to supporting those struggling with schizophrenia.

The primary focus of the week long event is to primarily debunk certain myths and stereotypes of people living with schizophrenia, while also promoting resources and opportunities for those with the disease to prosper and achieve life goals. Some of the events available include the Third Annual Schizophrenia Awareness Walk and Mental Health Fair, which will offer attendees a chance to walk for schizophrenia while being provided with educational books authored by professors from the university.

Lectures, conferences and training centers are also provided to all visitors, including refreshments and meals issued to all of those who attend the Northeast Ohio Speakers Bureau Training Session on May 23, where guests can actually get a chance to talk one-on-one with people who live with schizophrenia and are willing to share their experience to others.

Spreading schizophrenia awareness
While the event is a great recognition of the strife and challenges people with schizophrenia have to overcome, more attention is needed to officially provide more awareness to the general public. This is most importantly a relevant topic for the youth of today, in which according to the Schizophrenia and Related Disorders Alliance of America, of people diagnosed with the disease develop the condition during years 16 through 25.
