More older women than previously thought may benefit from a prescription to buy Hyalgan, as a new study indicates that rates of knee pain are very common among this group.

Researchers from the University of Oxford found that 63 percent of women over the age of 50 experience persistent, incidental or intermittent knee pain. The findings were based on 12 years of survey data collected from more than 1,000 individuals.

The survey data further revealed that osteoarthritis and high body mass indexes were among the leading causes of knee pain among older women. Obesity was associated with incidental knee pain, osteoarthritis with persistent knee pain and knee injury with persistent or intermittent pain.

The researchers said their findings could contribute to the development of preventative approaches that address risk factors for knee pain early, before a woman requires a prescription to buy Hyalgan. This could significantly improve therapeutic approaches for the condition.

Given the high prevalence and steep cost of knee pain - both in terms of economic factors and lifestyle - the findings could have far-reaching implications.
