Pharmacists have a major role to play in the delivery of care, experts say. Whether an individual goes to their local neighborhood drug store or uses Canadian internet pharmacy, pharmacists can deliver important information to patients that enhances their care. Jenelle Sobotka, president of the American Pharmacist Association, said that healthcare delivery systems are changing. While this is generally a positive thing, the role of the pharmacist in healthcare should not be discounted. "New healthcare delivery systems are still being tested and patient care needs transformed. We must keep our focus to ensure pharmacists are recognized as the healthcare team member responsible for ensuring optimal medication therapy outcomes for patients," Sobotka said. Healthcare does need reforms, she added. Pharmacists should be viewed as an asset in this process rather than simply as someone who distributes medications. Pharmacists can discuss treatment approaches with doctors to make sure each patient receives the optimal treatment for their condition. Sobotka recommended that pharmacists play a leading role in transforming healthcare systems. This could have a beneficial effect on the delivery of care. |
