Seroquel may work for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder due to common biology

Patients taking Seroquel may or may not be aware that the drug is used to treat both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Not only are these two diseases related to mental health, but researchers from Yale University have found that they share common biology with one another.

"We have known for a long time that the clinical symptoms are shared substantially between the two conditions, but when you look at the biology, these illnesses also blur into each other," Godfrey Pearlson, co-author of the study, explained to Yale News. "It is clear that they are not two nicely separated packets, but there is a substantial crossover between the two."

The group of investigators looked at participants who were diagnosed with schizophrenia, psychotic bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, healthy comparison subjects as well as family members of those suffering from the with the mental disorders. By way of three multi-site studies (located in Massachusetts, Illinois, Maryland and Texas), it was found that both bipolar and schizophrenic patients share similar brain and cognitive abnormalities.

Specifically, these patients were found to have deficits in the brain among grey and white matters. When paired with the cognitive similarities, it is difficult to find a distinction between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Additionally, the relatives of participants suffering from these two diseases also shared the abnormalities, but to a lesser degree.

As more evidence is uncovered about these mental health issues, it becomes more difficult to differ between the two. It's also worth noting, as explained by Pearlson, that the National Institute of Mental Health proposed reclassification of these and other illnesses based on biological measures recently, which drives the need for further research.
