Do not take any more or less medication than prescribed. Store the medication at room temperature away from heat, moisture, and light.

You may have to monitor your heart rate on a daily basis to make sure the medication is working effectively. Your blood pressure should be checked on a regular basis to monitor your response to Clonidine.

Take any missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for the next scheduled one and take that dose instead.

Precautions for Clonidine

Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, severe coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorder, slow heartbeats, stroke, low blood pressure, a history of heart attack, stroke, or kidney disease.

Tell your doctor about any allergies and medications you are taking, especially beta blockers and drugs treating anxiety, mental illness, seizures, or sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and antidepressants.

Do not suddenly stop taking Clonidine as you could experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms like nervousness, headache, or uncontrollable shaking. You will likely need to decrease your dosage gradually over 2 to 4 days. If you are taking Clonidine for high blood pressure treatment, continue taking it even after feeling well.

Make sure to avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated in hot weather. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects as well. Taking Clonidine could impair your thinking or reactions, so be careful doing anything requiring alertness like driving.

Consult your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking Clonidine if you are 65 or older as it's not as safe to take for the elderly as other medications.

Tell you doctor if you become or plant to become pregnant or start breastfeeding.

Do not give Clonidine to a child younger than age 6.
