Clinical depression is a mood disorder that is biologically tied to stress and anxiety. There are different types of clinical depression, from milder or temporary forms such as Dysthymia, postpartum depression or seasonal depression; to more severe versions such as major depression, manic depression, bipolar depression or psychotic depression.

How do You Know If You are Depressed?

In order to officially classify as clinical depression, you would have at least 5 of the following symptoms every day, for longer than 2 weeks:

  • Difficulty in making decisions or concentrating
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Noticeable loss of interest in daily life activities
  • Noticeable change in weight
  • Feeling helpless or worthless
  • Consistent thoughts of suicide

Antidepressant Medications

Your doctor will be able to work with you and develop a treatment plan that may include psychotherapy and/or antidepressant medications. The most commonly prescribed types of antidepressants are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin and Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

Remember that certain depression medications will work better for you than others, so be sure to talk openly with your doctor about how effective you find your treatment. It is normal to try different products, and depending on your condition, possibly a combination of more than one product. Finding the medication that works best for you will help counteract and manage your symptoms.

How do Antidepressants Help Treat Depression?

Moods are regulated by brain chemicals, primarily 3 neurotransmitters called norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. When there is an imbalance in the brain chemicals, it can cause depression. Antidepressants work to regulate neurotransmitter activity, or to help receptors function better with the neurotransmitters.
