Asthma Symptoms and Triggers

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that causes the airways to become inflamed and constrict, making breathing difficult. You may experience mild to severe asthma, and your doctor will recommend medication and treatment accordingly. Asthma symptoms include coughing, wheezing, and tightening in the chest. People with severe asthma may have trouble speaking or performing activities. Asthma flare-ups and attacks can be managed with short-term and long-term medication.

It is important to be aware of what allergens trigger your condition. Typical asthma allergens include certain food, dust, molds, animal dander, and pollens. It is possible for some people with severe asthma to not have identifiable allergens or triggers.

Asthma Treatment

The two main medications used to manage asthma are quick-relief medications such as bronchodilators, or controller medication such as anti-inflammatory steroids. Bronchodilators are important to have on hand in case of a sudden asthma attack, and start acting within minutes to help open the airways and calm wheezing. They are known as rescue inhalers, and are meant to be used only when immediate relief is needed. There are long-acting bronchodilators, but if you using this treatment, it is still important to be taking another long-term asthma medication at the same time.

Inhaled steroid medication is the everyday asthma treatment. These are more important for long-term management. Inhaled steroids are the best way to get asthma medications to your lungs. You can talk to your doctor about which inhaler is best for you, because some are used for inhaling single medications and others are for inhaling two different medications.
