What is High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the intensity of blood against the artery walls as it pumps through our system. High blood pressure, or hypertension, means that the blood pressure is putting strain on the arteries that is damaging and potentially dangerous. High blood pressure is the number one cause of strokes, as well as a primary cause of heart attacks. At least 1 in 3 American adults have high blood pressure, and have a higher risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney problems and death. The reason high blood pressure is a cause for concern is that there are no signs or obvious symptoms that give warning before a heart attack.

Besides putting stress on the heart, high blood pressure can also damage blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and the brain. High blood pressure can be a chronic condition, but you can work towards improved heart and physical health with an effective combination of exercise, diet and medication. Quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, limiting salt intake, increasing aerobic activity, and reaching a healthy weight will also help lower high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure Medication

Medication can help lower hypertension-related stroke by 35-45%, heart attacks by 20-25%, and heart failure by over 50%. There are different types of medication that your doctor may recommend for your specific condition and degree of hypertension, including

  • Diuretics
  • Adrenergic receptor antagonists (Beta blockers, Alpha blockers)
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II receptor antagonists
  • Combination medications
