What is High Cholesterol?

High cholesterol is a condition that occurs when there is continued excess of cholesterol in the blood. This can lead to a buildup around the arteries, making it more difficult for proper blood flow to reach the heart. High cholesterol and heart disease are highly correlated. When blood flow is restricted or insufficient, it can put you at risk for heart attack or heart disease.

Good and Bad Cholesterol

It is important to know about the 3 different types of cholesterol and how they each play a role in your overall cholesterol levels.

  • Good Cholesterol: HDL. It benefits you to have higher levels of HDL, because this is the good cholesterol. It helps to eliminate LDL (the bad cholesterol) buildup in the heart. HDL can be lowered by factors like genetics, Type 2 diabetes, smoking, sedentary habits, and being overweight. Do make every effort to control the lifestyle habits that are in your control, as low levels of HDL can put you at risk for heart issues.

  • Bad Cholesterol: LDL and Triglycerides. LDL levels can increase from a high saturated and trans fat diet, and can clog your arteries. Triglycerides are body fat that is caused by extra stores of energy from food. A combination of high triglycerides with low HDL or high LDL can put you at risk for Stroke, Artherosclerosis or Heart attack.

High Cholesterol Medication

Statin medications are the prescribed treatment for high cholesterol. These products help increase good cholesterol and decrease bad cholesterol. There are other types of cholesterol drugs, such as Niacin or Bile-acid resins, if your doctor recommends. Your high cholesterol medications will need to be taken along with regular exercise and healthy changes in diet. Canadian Pharmacy Meds carries the top treatments for you at the best prices.
