What is Erectile Dysfunction? An area of men's health that affects millions of men just in the United States is erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is a condition where men have difficulty becoming or staying erect for sexual intercourse. It is common that men experience ED on occasion, and it doesn't necessarily mean medication is needed. However, if you find you have problems becoming erect more than half the time, ED medication could be beneficial for you. Often, it can be a related to or a result of injury, stress, medication side effects, or diseases like Artherosclerosis or Vascular Disease. How Does ED Medication Work? The most well-known ED drug is Viagra because it is effective and non-invasive (other treatments insert or inject medication into the penis). Viagra belongs to a drug class called Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which are pill medications. Besides Viagra, other PDE5 inhibitors include Cialis or Levitra. These are all effective options, unless you are dealing with ED that is caused by neurological issues. Remember that there are Generic Alternative versions of these branded drugs that have the same benefits but are available at a lower price point. Psychological therapy is better suited for treating ED that is a result of psychological reasons. This can range from couples' therapy, personal counseling, or behavioral therapy. You can also ask your doctor about medications that are injected by needle or inserted as a suppository into the penis. If these options are not successful for you, you may discuss penile implants or vascular surgery with your doctor. |
